Oat and Quinoa Hot Cereal

This oat and quinoa hot cereal will be one of those recipes you’ll probably make for yourself when you want to curl up with a good book. It’s perfect when you want something comforting but not heavy or find yourself alone for breakfast.

No matter what they case is, you’ll love the taste and how well it compliments fresh fruit.

You’ve heard the advice – EAT BREAKFAST! It keeps you from eating out of control later in the day when your body says “feed me.” So, I’ve included this yummy hot cereal that uses quinoa flakes to up the protein and keep you full longer. It really is satisfying and helps battle those ridiculous cravings that happen to us all.

Quinoa Flakes

You could use fresh berries if you have them on hand or they’re in season but if not, frozen works fine too. Blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are so healthy and they all taste wonderful in this simple recipe. Check out this article on all the health benefits of berries.

You could use dried fruit or berries but be careful about freshness and sugar content. Also, use good quality vanilla and maple syrup. That is important to maintaining a tasty flavor.

Oat and Quinoa Hot Cereal

This quick and hearty breakfast is a perfect go to on mornings you want to stay full without going overboard. This dish is a great way to incorporate fruit into your morning routine and start your day off right with healthy beginnings.

Cook Time10 minutes mins
Total Time15 minutes mins
Servings: 2 people

Equipment

  • Non-stick pan

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/3 tsp Ceylon cinnamon*
  • 1/3 tsp vanilla extract non-alcoholic preferred
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup quinoa Flakes
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened homemade yogurt or small carton non-dairy store-bought
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries defrosted
Prevent your screen from going dark

Instructions

  • Add water to saucepan along with the oats, quinoa, cinnamon, vanilla and salt.
  • Bring to a boil, lower the heat and cook until thickened, about 10 minutes.
  • Serve in a bowl along with half of the yogurt, half of the berries and a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Enjoy 🙂

Notes

*I recommend using Ceylon cinnamon, which has a sweeter, more delicate flavor, because the most common cinnamon, cassia, contains coumarin, a naturally occurring compound that may be toxic to the liver at doses of 1 teaspoon per day for adults and 1/4 teaspoon for children a few times a week.     Where do you find quinoa flakes?

      Hi Robin, The easiest brand to find is Ancient Harvest, although there are others like the Shiloh Farms brand. Ancient Harvest Quinoa Flakes are sold in quite a few stores like Sprouts, Whole Foods, Safeway, Target, and others. Try their store locator for stores near you.
